Creating Space for God’s Spirit

In this unit, the center of the room is the focus. The screen is closer back to wall, almost flat against it. The chairs are in four very deliberate and equal quadrants. Banners representing the four quadrants hang in the corners of the room. Strips of crepe paper (blue, purple, red, green) matching the colors of the banners decorate the chairs and identify the four groups.

Worshiping with Our Children

  • Sabrina leads our children in talking about being centered

Have you ever played with a yo-yo? Let’s watch this video where someone does yo-yo tricks. The yo-yo expert has to be very centered, and watching carefully, and feel her or his center of gravity at all times. Do you know where your center of gravity is? It’s the center of your whole body and weight; if you are aware of it, you can run, or ride a bike, or climb, or even do yo-yo tricks. The Bible says that God created us, and that God lives in our hearts – sort of our soul’s center of gravity. Let’s thank God for that.

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Jillian D. reads from The Power of Myth by 20th-century American mythologist and scholar Joseph Campbell

We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find a monster, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay the enemy, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we will come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we will be with all the world.

  • Rick introduces the new unit, and leads us in an exercise with the 4 Hearts quiz

First, we are all given pieces of paper listing four sets of characteristics, some positive and some negative. We are instructed to circle the characteristics that we feel describe us — without thinking about it too much! We then note the total number of items marked in each group on the quiz score sheet. Rick then explains the four groups, including how all of them contain both positive and negative qualites, and how no group is better than the others. They are all just different. Finally, we mess up the chairs.

Telling The Story and Our Story

This is what the Lord of the angel armies says: You are the apple of my eye. — Zechariah 2:8

God created the human in God’s own image; God created the male and the female in the image of God. — Genesis 1:27

Don't you know? Your body, your self, is like a place where God is worshipped – you're not alone, you're not merely your self. — I Corinthians 6:19

I honor you, God, because you made me – and, like you, I am an amazing thing, a fearsome creation! You create with wonderful power – I know this, intimately, in my soul, which is your creation. — Psalm 139:14

Go Out to Be Centered in Your Soul

  • Sabrina leads us in a choosing exercise

We are invited to take a piece of crepe paper from the chairs in group where we had the lowest number on the quiz, because that’s where we have the most to learn. The paper is a reminder of this opportunity.

  • Sabrina dismisses us
  • “You Taught My Heart to Sing” plays again as folks clean up the room and get ready for the Ice Cream Social!
