Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is meditative. The four Heart Energy banners are still up, with words added to the Building banner. This is week is giving energy – but also doing energy, which is the theme for the second half of this unit. What do these four energies become in real life when we activate them and welcome them? A table with communion elements is in the center of the room. Today is about God’s Self-Giving and our self-giving.

  • “The Old Ship of Zion” by Isham Williams & The Williams Singers plays
  • A young Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell three times

Worshiping with Our Children

  • Rick leads our children in talking about giving

Do you think we can help everyone who needs help? Who needs help? Yes, people who don't have enough to eat, or a house to live in or are sad or who don't have a family. Our faith community helps lots and lots of people, but we can't help everyone. So, should we just quit? No way! Jesus told his friends to help just a few people at a time. Let’s ask God to help us do that.

  • Brian K. and MS read Jesus’ instructions to his followers

Jesus put his students into teams, and said to them, “There is a harvest. It’s bigger than you can imagine. Ask the master of the harvest for more workers!”

He gave them instructions as he was sending them out: “You don’t have to go far; go to the people around you. As you go, tell people this: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near you now.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, and throw out evil. You have received my teaching without having to pay for it; therefore, give my teachings without demanding payment.

“Don’t take a backpack for the road or an extra shirt or sandals or a walking stick. Don’t put together gold or silver or copper coins for your money belts to take on your trips; workers deserve to be fed, so accept what's given to you as you go; it will be enough. Whatever city or village you go into, find somebody in it you can trust, and stay there until you leave.

“When you go into a house, give them the blessing ‘May peace be on this house.’ If anyone there shares God’s peace, then your peace will rest on that person. If not, simply allow your blessing to return to you. And if anyone refuses to welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or city.”

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Rick talks
  • Rick reads from theologian Karl Rahner, 20th-century German Jesuit priest and theologian, in his Foundations of Christian Faith

What do we mean when we speak of God’s self-communication? We mean that God becomes “immediate” to us. We know God through our own experience; we know ourselves as the recipients and beneficiaries of God’s call, and as persons who desire to respond to it. We experience the knowledge of God who calls to us, and the love of God who asks us to respond.

  • We share in God’s Giving through the sacrament of Holy Communion

This time, the servers say “God has given God’s Self for you” and “Go and give yourself for others.”

Go Out to Give with Your Giving Heart
